The Foreign Correspondents' Association of Southern Africa strongly condemns the arrest of our colleague, veteran Zimbabwean journalist Jeffrey Moyo, who faces charges of violating Section 36 of the Immigration Act following the deportation from Zimbabwe of two New York Times reporters.
This incident illustrates a worrying deterioration of the state of press freedom in Zimbabwe. The detainment of Mr Moyo is a violation of the right to press freedom and we urge the authorities to drop all charges against him.
We further encourage the state to reiterate to its officials that a free and independent media is a cornerstone of good governance.
